The Core Competencies are a big part of the redesigned curriculum in BC. An important part of reporting out on successful use of the Core Competencies is the self-reflection all grade 8 and 9 students are required to complete.
The 6 Core Competencies are:
Positive Personal and Cultural Identity
Personal Awareness and Responsibility
Each student in grade 8 and 9 will record evidence of Core Competency growth by using the Core Competencies Recording Log. This log will be completed over time and is considered a “work in progress”. Here is an example of a partially filled out recording log: Core Competencies Recording Log EXEMPLAR. Please ask for help if you need to know how to draw lines in your chart to help keep organized through the school year.
Self reporting on the Core Competencies is about reflecting on current practices and making plans for next steps (asking: what do I need to do next to become a more skilled communicator, or to have a more positive cultural identity).
Here are the links to the Core Competency Profiles. These will help you to determine where you are at with your demonstration of each competency and where you should be heading next. Your next steps should reflect goals for the coming months, not year.
This is valuable work and is a skill that all BC students will take into their senior high school years and beyond into adulthood.
